In the last year (2000) the number of motion detectors we know about in the ISU tunnel system has gone from zero to 12. And there are probably more in tunnels we haven't visited lately. However, we have set off several detectors in the same night and gone outside to watch and the cops never show up. This map is a revised edition of the map some students made a few years ago, with more building warnings, locations of motion detectors (shown by yellow donuts), and maps of building crawl tunnels/crawlspaces. Mechanical rooms are not shown. Most of the yellow (possibly dangerous) buildings were marked as red on the older map but we couldn't find anything unsafe about them. The extensive crawl tunnel system under Friley is shown on a separate map [see below].

Building-specific notes:

Ames Lab: Don't hang out in the pedestrian tunnel that intersects the steam tunnel. A guard patrolls that area and has caught several explorers on their way across the pedestrian tunnel. If you want to get across the pedestrian tunnel, someone will have to crawl around the pipes below it and open the door on the other side.

Pearson: There used to be an alarm on the tunnel door and the cops came within 5 minutes, we checked both sides of the door (but did not open it) and found no alarm.

Beardshear, Curtiss, and Marston: Really cool system of tunnels and rooms, especially under Beardshear.

Food Sciences: Manholes lead from steam tunnels up into crawl tunnels, they appear to run alongside each other on the map but actually are on top of each other. You can tell where the steam tunnel runs because you have to climb over it in the crawl tunnels.

Kildee: Interesting tunnel and air-duct system interaction. To open the door from the tunnel you have to push hard against it and then wivel it open. It will slam against the wall with a breeze that almost blows you over. (Note: Wivel is a new term meaning to slip a pocketknife back and forth in the latch, sliding the latch back and opening the door.)

Memorial Union: We've never entered the building from the tunnels, but you can walk right in to the basement which is full of interesting corridors. However, this area is haunted by a janitor 24 hours a day who will walk you upstairs.

Black, Beardshear, Curtiss, and LeBaron: These buildings were red on the old map but we couldn't find any sign of an alarm or night janitor unless you count the motion detectors outside Beardshear and LeBaron.
