One day three of us from Iowa State, tired of exploring our own tunnels full of motion detectors, decided to try some new territory, namely UNI. We found an entrance before we even started looking for one, a manhole on the most traveled part of campus - between the library and the Maucker Union. Instead of looking for a better entrance we decided to save time and tackle what we had found. It worked out well with three people - one to jump down the manhole, another to lift it up and replace it, and a third to talk to the lifter so he doesn't look suspicious standing by himself. The jumper then let everybody else in through the east gym.

We mapped pretty much the whole system in 5 hours. We were able to come out in every building the steam tunnels connected to. In a couple, namely Curris and Campbell, the door to the mechanical room was unlocked, so we could've walked right in that way. The only building we didn't try was the south entrance to Maucker Union, because a pipe was making an unbearably loud noise up that tunnel.

Some things to note:

The only tunnel we didn't explore is shown as a black and yellow lines on the map. This tunnel was above the level of the main tunnel and to get to it you have to climb a ladder sideways and risk rubbing against a pipe so hot that you can spit on it and smell the spit burning. I would guess this tunnel leads to #30-32, 42, 43, maybe 50, and if we're lucky some of the outlying buildings like the UNI Dome, Jennings Dr, and 52-53.

#21, Lang Hall, is being renovated, and has some really cool areas to explore.

#41, McCollum Science, has a large tunnel around its perimeter with air ducts, off of this tunnel there is a door that at first doesn't want to open but if you push it really hard it will slam against the wall and the resulting air current can knock you down. Go through two air locks and there is another similar door that leads to a mechanical room that leads to the hall. We thought if all these doors were left open at once it would really screw up the building's air system.

The hatches to the east of #23 can be opened by applying torque with a strong pocketknife. If you can't get in through one of the buildings, the hatch to the east is the most inconspicuous entrance.

Close to #28 there is a spot where the tunnels come up into a mech room from both north and south. This is the Jezz room, I guess it's where the steam originates. We played jezzball on the computer in there and beat all of their high scores.

Unlike Iowa State, UNI tunnels are full of hills and stairs. Most notably, just north of the Jezz room, the tunnel goes down steeply and then goes uphill again. It could be avoiding another pedestrian or utility tunnel.
